Low Energy Photonic Therapy (LEPT)
		Low Energy Photon Therapy is the application of specific forms of monochromatic light with selected optical parameters. There are different probes for providing infrared and red light over large or small sites of injury or pain. This technology is available at Cornell Physiotherapy in East Markham. The light emitting diodes create a 3 dimensional or reverse pyramid distribution of photon energy in the tissue. The resultant larger area of energy absorption is advantageous in the treatment of multiple sites of pain and/or soft tissue injury.

Physiological effects of LEPT include photochemical changes in cell metabolism, cell proliferation, cell motility and enzyme secretion and trans membrane transport with increased vascularization of the tissues. Improved soft tissue healing is the benefit of the application of LEPT. Cornell Physiotherapists have an advanced level of orthopaedic manual therapy assessment and treatment which facilitates the use of this technology with patients who have acute injuries as well as chronic injuries that have not improved with rest, medication or other therapies. LEPT is also used to deactivate tender trigger points and treat acupuncture points to decrease pain and enable the patient to respond to manual therapy and participate in a customized exercise program to recover from their injury and stay active. Evidence to support LEPT soft tissue healing and pain relief Scarborough General Hospital has been using LEPT for over 10 years. A study carried out at the hospital evaluated the efficacy of the treatment of leg ulcers. After 3 weeks, the treated group’s ulcers decreased in size by 55% compared to an increase in size of 24% of the placebo group. After 10 weeks, 76% of total ulcers were healed in the treated group vs. only 15% in the placebo group. A multi-center double-blind study which included Scarborough General showed pain relief of upper extremity tendonitis pain with LEPT. A more recent study conducted by Dr. A. Chaiton of Humber Regional Hospital showed a substantial improvement in motor and sensory function in carpal tunnel syndrome when LEPT is combined with specific laser treatment.
